Stuart's education consisted of the Berkeley School in New York, Yale University and the University of Cincinnati, where he received a B.S. in 1897. He was a 33d degree Mason and at the time of his death,was the executive secretary for the Knights Templar Educational Loan Foundation. He joined the Tompkins Lodge of Masons in 1906 and held many important Masonic posts, state and local.
He was also a retired lieutenant colonel for the New York National Guard.
Stuart was head of the Walker Safe Company in New York City. He was the former Vice President of the Hall Safe Company, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, for the east coast division. He resided in Staten Island most of his life.
