Cloyd Lee was the youngest child of Richard William and Della Johnson Menscer. He was killed in action during the Korean War, and it was reported that he was the first known casualty of that conflict from Iredell County, North Carolina.

His first cousin, Bristol Reece Johnson, was killed in action while serving in the United States Navy during World War II and also has a memorial at Hebron.

The following was taken from the Oct. 26, 1950 edition of THE STATESVILLE LANDMARK (Statesville, NC):

Pfc. Cloyd Menscer, member of the 85th Infantry division, was killed in action in Korea on the 21st of September. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Menscer of Iredell county and was 19 years old.

The following was taken from the 35th Infantry Division Regiment Association website:

PFC Menser, RA12316264, was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. His military occupation specialty was 4745-Light Weapons Infantryman. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

***NOTE: As of January 2009, he was one of four Korean War serviceman from Iredell County whose body had yet to be recovered (along with J. W. Branton, Carl Lewis Forsyth, Jr., and Paul Henry Vell Trueheart). Hopefully with the aid of mitochondrial DNA, the unknown remains of over 8,000 serviceman from that conflict will one day be identified.
