Butler City Police Sgt. James M. Kauffman, 45, of 11-D Lumar Village, died at 9:02 p.m. Saturday in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, after an illness.

Sgt. Kauffman had served with the Butler City Police since 1970 and had previously been employed as a police agent by Bessemer Railroad since 1962.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 32; the Butler County Law Enforcement Association; Frederick O. Blankenship Post 117, American Legion, Butler; and Moose Lodge 64, of Butler.

He had served with the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962, including two years in Germany.

Born in Warren, Ohio, April 10, 1941, he was the son of Mary Pears Kauffman McCloskey and the late Merle O. Kauffman.

Surviving are three daughters, his mother, of Slippery Rock; and a granddaughter.

KAUFFMAN-Friends of Butler City Police Sgt. James M. Kauffman, of 11-D Lumar Village, who died Saturday, Nov. 22, 1986, will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the funeral home, with the Rev. Gordon Powell, pastor of the North Main Street Church of God, officiating. Burial will be in Slippery Rock Cemetery. Arrangements by Thompson-Miller.
Military honors will be accorded by Butler City Police and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 249, of Butler.
