COTTAGE GROVE - A memorial service will be held April 19 for LeRoy Dean "Abner" Atwood of Cottage Grove, who died March 20 of congestive heart failure . He was 78.

Atwood was born June 24, 1926, in Humbolt, Neb., to Logan and Anna Belle Atwood. He married Joyce LaBlue on Dec. 21, 1946, in Cottage Grove.

He served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a log truck driver and worked for Warren Simmons Logging of Cottage Grove for 18 years. He had lived in Cottage Grove for more than 50 years.

Atwood enjoyed camping, fishing, old-time country music and old Western movies.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Deanna Fournier of Cottage Grove; two sons, LeRoy "Speed" Jr. of Cottage Grove and Nicky of Crown Point, Ind.; a sister, Phyllis Freeman of Creswell; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Marsha Atwood Bounds, died in 2000.

The April 19 service will be held at 2 p.m. at Living Faith Christian Fellowship in Cottage Grove.
