From the Cheyenne Wyoming Leader

Miss Bailey, a recent arrival in Cheyenne as a domestic for a private family, was the victim of a robbbery in a residential neighborhood on the evening of Sept. 12th. She was shot in the abdomen with a revolver and died the following day after surgery.

Outrage accompanied the newspaper's sensationalized account which theorized motives including a jilted lover or which impugned her character.

Dying, Miss Bailey was consistent in desposing she did not know the assailant. She was worked about a year in Denver at a hotel before accepting employment through an agency to come to Cheyenne as a stranger.

All motived other than robbery were eventually dis-spelled with the arrest the following December of the perpertrator. He had abritrarily sought to rob someone in order to return to a craps game where he had been losing. Described as a "giant", Mack Johnson, 29 years old and an African American, pled guilty on December 31st and was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Wyoming peniteniary. He was quickly and quietly escorted out of town to avoid a riot by bigots and vigilantes.

Miss Bailey was 22 years of age, was determined to be a woman of good character just embarking on adult life. At the time of her death, she was not in a romantic relationship.

Besides her parents (Mr. and Mrs. J.W.Bailey of New Lexington, Ohio) she was survived by at least six brothers as well as an uncle residing in Colorado Springs, CO
