James C. "Barney" Barnhill, 88, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010. Funeral: 3 p.m. Saturday in Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Chapel, 5725 Colleyville Blvd. Interment: Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Barney entered the U.S. Navy in 1940 attending Bugle School and was shortly assigned to the USS Enterprise (CV-6). It was Barney's bugle that sounded general quarters following the attack on Pearl Harbor. During his 3 1/2 years aboard the Enterprise it earned the title of the most decorated warship of World War II. After having attended Naval Photographic School, and upon achieving chief photographer's rank, he was alternate photographer to the White House under Truman and Eisenhower. Retiring after 23 years, Barney earned bachelor's and master's degrees from TCU. Post naval careers included General Dynamics, teaching and counseling positions within the Fort Worth ISD. He was a published author of World War II history and also a guest speaker. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Barnhill; three brothers; and one sister. Survivors: His wife, Venita Pippen Drury Barnhill; daughters, Jane Stokes (Gary), Julie Alberda (Henry), Jo Dennis; Venita's children, Pam Wood, Gary Drury (Kelly) and Thad Drury (Suzanne); 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family.
