William Vernal Johns beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Thursday, November 8, 2007 surrounded by his children.
Vernal was born October 11, 1921 in North Ogden, to William Thomas and Celia Brown Johns. He grew up on his father's dairy farm where he learned the value of hard work and integrity. He was educated in North Ogden and graduated from Weber High School. He owned his own dairy farm in North Ogden and later in Monroe, Utah where he taught his children the same values he learned as a youth. After retiring from farming, he worked as a custodian for the LDS Church.
He married Lois Afton Sherman in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on April 30, 1942. They shared a wonderful life of 57 years together. They were the proud parents of 10 children, 51 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren with seven on the way. She preceded him in death on June 7, 1999.
Vernal served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater and earned the rank of Master Sergeant.
He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings including Scout Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Elders Quorum Presidency and Assistant Stake Clerk.
Vernal is survived by his children, William Leigh (Kathryn), Ann (Michael) Morby, and Keith Ivan, all of Ogden, UT; Kurt Sherman (Konnie), Annabella, UT; Darlene (Randy) Jewkes, and Jay Micahel (Susan), both of Richfield, UT; Garth Thomas (Melody), Glenwood, UT; Vickie (Stan) Hunt, Monroe, UT; Mary Lois (Paul) Foreman, Austin, UT; one daughter-in-law, Susan Johns, Pleasant View, UT; four sisters, Maurine (Halver) Garner, Donna (Kent) Cannon, Janet Saunders, and Joyce (George) Elmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, Craig Vernal, one granddaughter, one great-grandson and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at the Taylor 3rd Ward Chapel, 2200 South 4300 West, Taylor, Utah.
Friends may call at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday at the Ward Chapel 1:45 to 2:45 p.m.
Interment, Ben Lomond Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded.
