Gerte married Louis J. Duvigneaud, who was a letter carrier with USPS. Their only child, DeSales, was born to them in Chicago on 26 JAN 1914. Louis suffered a debilitating stroke in early life, then died in 1924 after suffering a second stroke. Gerte's father became ill and was hospitalized in Kane IL, so the rest of the family moved to Chicago and they all lived together, remaining as a unit even after her father's death in 1929. Gerte helped to support the extended family by working in the hairdressing business.
In the early 1950s, Gerte moved to Corpus Christi Texas to be near her son and his young family. She went to work for the US Government in a civil service typing pool. She made a new life for herself and remained in Texas when DeSales and family took a tour of duty in the Philipines where Dee was the lead doctor at the Naval base in Subic Bay. Sometime in the 1960s, Gerte moved to San Diego, again to be near her family and continued her office work at the Balboa Naval Hospital.
