Rev. M. T. Lewis was a prominent member of the Charlottesville African-American community, having served as Pastor of The Delevan Church, as well as being an active member in various associations designed to aid African-Americans in the Charlottesville area.

The Delevan Church also known as The old "Mudwall" building which used to be the Delevan Hotel is known today as First Baptist Church on Main St. in Charlottesville, VA.
