Lawery Kie Owen, age 78, passed away in Centralia, WA on Saturday, September 18, 2010. He was born to Samuel and Pearl Owen on April 11, 1932 in Rosman, NC.
He joined the U.S. Air force and served in S.A.C. He was a chef for 16 years and then a General's Aide the last 6 years of his enlistment. In his youth, he played and sang country music in many bands over the years and even on the radio. He loved to fish and hunt and even won bow-hunting tournaments. Lawery loved to take his family camping and taught his girl's how to bait and clean their own fish. He was a skilled craftsman, loving to work with wood and leather and was very talented when it came to carving and inlay with wood and leather. Using these skills, he created special gifts of memento chests for each of his girls and handmade toys for his grandchildren. Lawery was also known for making his own custom knives. He loved his grandchildren and always had quarters for them. They were always allowed a fist full of nails, a hammer, and wood and left to "bang nails." Lawery was known for only wearing his cowboy boots, shopping pawn-shops and thrift stores for a "good deal," and his good sense of humor. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner was cooked by him and he shared this love of cooking with his daughters. He called himself the "U.S. Bank of Fatherhood" and loved to spoil his girls. He was generous to everyone.
Lawery was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Lorie Ann Owen, brothers Lawrence Victor Owen, Virgil Owen and Spencer Lionel Owen, and sister Dana Gilkerson. He is survived by his wife Judith Owen, daughters Dana Knoll, Clariece Knoll and Becky Hainer, brother Leland Owen, 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
