Sumter-Jewel Martin Howle, 84, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, in Sumter, South Carolina.

Born in Branchville, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Senator Whiteford Claude Martin and the late Ruth Reeves Martin.

Mrs. Howle was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. She earned her Master of Arts of Education at Western Carolina University. A longtime teacher and guidance counselor at Andrews High School, she also served as editor of her hometown newspaper. For many years she was a devoted and active member of First Baptist Church of Andrews. She served on the Georgetown County Library Board and was active in civic and social organizations.

Surviving are a daughter, Claudia Howle Medori and husband Eugene, of Atlanta; two sons, Jack Delbert Howle Jr. and wife Mary, of Sumter, and Brian Martin Howle of Pawleys Island; a brother, Dr. George W. Martin of Falls Church, Va.; five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by four months by her beloved husband of 62 years, Jack Delbert Howle Sr.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Andrews Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Sapp officiating.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Andrews.
