"W. K. BECKLEY, LAST ORRVILLE VETERAN OF SPANISH AMERICAN WAR, IS DEAD
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon for W. Karl Beckley, 86, Orrville's last Spanish American War veteran, who saw service on the island of Cuba during the famous military campaign of "Teddy" Roosevelt. Mr. Beckley died at the Wooster Hospital Saturday.

Mr. Beckley, as a young man, joined Company D, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, in Wooster at the outbreak of hostilities with Cuba in 1898. He went to Cuba and served during the hostilities there, frequently seeing Teddy Roosevelt during the action. After the war, he spent some time in Washington D. C. as a photographer and made a visit to the White House where he was received by President Theodore Roosevelt. He was guest of honor at Orrville Memorial Day services in 1958.

Mr. Beckley was born January 14, 1874, in Orrville, to Conrad and Mary A. Graham Beckley. He worked in the Akron Koch Clothing Store and O'Neils as a clerk for a number of years. He was a member of the Methodist Church and Company D Veterans' Association. He and his wife lived for the past 24 years at 125 Arch street in Orrville.

He is survived by his wife, Jennie C. Witwer, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Frey and Gresser Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bailey officiating. Burial was at Crown Hill Cemetery. A military service was performed at the grave."
