Another civil war veteran has joined the ranks of the dead. Selby Lewis passed away at his home in Jefferson, Tuesday morning. He was stricken with paralysis last Thursday morning and never regained consciousness.
The deceased was born January 21, 1838 and was the son of Henry Lewis, a pioneer of this county, who lived just south of where the town of Cambria now stands. As near as we can remember there were ten children in the Henry Lewis family. But one, Aaron Lewis, of Carroll county, survives.
Selby Lewis was twice married. His first wife was Sarah C. Michaels. To this union, entered into on September 27, 1866, there were born seventeen children, nine of whom have passed away. Those living are Elmer E., and Manson, of Marion; John H., Indianapolis; Jessie M., Rossville; Lloyd D. and Quincy A., whereabouts unknown; Mrs. David Siegfried and Mrs. Emerson Troxell, Mulberry.
The first wife died February 25, 1897, and on November 18, 1897 Mr. Lewis married Mrs. Anna Eaton, who survives. Selby Lewis enlisted in Company E, 40th Indiana regiment in 1861 and was mustered out in 1866.
The funeral service was conducted at the U. B. church in Jefferson, Thursday morning; Q. A. Kennedy of Frankfort, having had charge of the service. The burial was at the Bunnell cemetery.
Besides his wife, children and brother, the deceased is survived by 23 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
