50th Anniversary of Charles/Augusta Gelbke

PIONEER OF CITY WEDDED 50 YEARS AGO
Ex-City Treasurer Chas. Gelbke & Wife to Observe Date September 21
WEDDED IN ILL; HERE SINCE 1857
September 21, 1911 will be the fiftieth anniversary of the marriage of
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gelbke, among the best known residents of this city
and the anniversary will be observed by the holding of a family reunion
and reception to friends at the Gelbke home, 905 Hancock Street. Owing
to the recent death of Ferd Kirchner, a relative, the celebration will
be informal and quiet.
Mr. and Mrs. Gelbke have been residents of this city since 1857 but
their marriage was celebrated at Lacon, Ill., where they visited at the
time. Returning to the city, the couple have made their home here ever
since, respected by a large circle of friends and esteemed by all who
know them.
But two of eight children born to the union are living, Mrs. W.A.
Raeuber this city and Mrs. Helen Kolhop of South Bend, Indiana and the
latter will be here to assist in commemorating the golden wedding day.
Mr. Gelbke is a native of Germany and is 73 years of age while Mrs.
Gelbke is 71 and was also born in Germany. Both are in excellent health
and Mr. Gelbke gives his personal attention to business affairs daily.
Mr. Gelbke, during his long residence here has been prominent in
business and city affairs having formerly been engaged in the shoe
business. He has served as city treasurer and up to this year one of two
city assessors employed by the city. Mr. Gelbke was assessor of District
No. 2, embracing the South side of the river and can point to a record
of conscientious service during the years he held the position. A large
circle of friends will be happy to tender congratulations to Mr. and
Mrs. Gelbke on the occasion of the golden wedding anniversary and to
express the hope that the two may be spared to observe the diamond
wedding anniversary.
