Marion - Emily Taylor Blanton, died Sunday, September 26, 2010. She was a native of McDowell County and a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Marion where she formerly had taught Sunday School in the Junior Department with Barbara Wagner and Mrs. R. C. Spratt. She was the youngest daughter of the late J. D. Blanton and Nancy Davis Fleming Blanton of Warrenton, N.C. Emily graduated from Marion High School and continued her education at a teacher's college in Virginia.

During her 36 years of teaching elementary school boys and girls the 3 R's (readin', ritin' and rithemetic') better stated Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, it was her desire to pass along to the pupils certain qualities that would make a difference in their lives then and that would go with them throughout adulthood.

She was interested in and supportive of local projects and endeavors that would benefit the lives of the people of Marion and McDowell County.

Emily was a member of the local Retired Teacher's Association. She also had life membership in both the North Carolina Association of Educators and National Education Association. For the past few years she had been a resident at the Baptist retirement Home in Asheville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Fleming Blanton and Charles David Blanton; four sisters, Mildred, Virginia, Nancy B. Nahikian of Raleigh and Josephine Blanton.

Surviving Emily is a niece, Dottie Nahikian Poulos of Virginia.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Marion, with Dr. Scott Hagaman officiating. The body will remain at the funeral home until taken to the church for services. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 99 N. Main Street, Marion, NC 28752 or to the charity of your choice.
