The Derrick, Apr 21 1900:
Franklin, April 20 -- D. W. Weikel, one of the oldest citizens of the county, died at his home near Dempseytown at 6 o'clock this morning of stomach trouble, aged 66 years. He had been an invalid for some months, but was able to be around and oversee the farm work until last evening. At midnight he was taken violently ill, and despite the best attentions, died at the hour stated. He was a member in good standing in the Lockard Lodge, Knights of Honor, and in the Franklin Lodge, United Workmen, and carried an insurance of $2,000 in each order. He is survived by his wife and nine children, four boys and five girls. He had resided for many years on the farm where he died and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. He was a Christian man, honest and upright in all his business transactions and his death will be universally deplored. The funeral will be held from Bethel church, near Dempseytown, on Sunday.
