The Tehachapi News

Doris Lucille Batty, 84, passed away Sept. 8, at her daughter's home in Tehachapi after a brief but difficult illness. Private interment was held on the afternoon of Monday, Sept. 13, at the Westside Cemetery, officiated by Reverend Lewis Wakeland.

Doris was born July 12, 1926, in Lawndale to Ruth and Barney McBeath. She was a graduate of Bakersfield High School and Fresno State University. She became a first grade teacher and spent the majority of her career at Tompkins Elementary. After retirement she spent two years teaching ESL at Xiamen University in Fujian, China, where she held clandestine Bible classes at night after school. She was responsible for bringing more than 50 Bibles into China.

After Doris returned from China, she helped her daughter and son-in-law build a house on her property, allowing her to help raise her grandsons and be a vital part of her family's daily lives. She loved her horses, her dogs and her garden. Doris left a legacy of faith in Christ, independence, pride in military service and self sacrifice to her loving family.

She is survived by her twin brother Douglas, and Wanda McBeath of Bakersfield and their family; sister-in-law Dianne McBeath of Burbank and her family; daughter and son-in-law Diane and Warren Shearer of Tehachapi and their sons, Matthew Shearer, Lance Cpl. Kam Shearer, U.S. Marine Corps, Petty Officer 2nd Class Cooper Shearer, U.S. Navy and his wife Kayleigh and Cpl. Brennan Shearer, U.S. Marine Corps; son Jim and daughter-in-law Lisa Batty of Bakersfield and their sons, Cpl. Stephen Batty, U.S. Marine Corps, John and Trevor, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In honor of the family legacy of military service and gratitude for the safe return of her father, who served in WWI, her two brothers, who served in WWII and her four grandsons who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, the family requests support of wounded warriors in Doris' name by donating to the Wounded Heroes Program at www.warriorlegacyfoundation.org.

The family especially wants to thank Doris' loving caregivers Donna and Crystal, and the wonderful staff of Optimal Hospice, Tehachapi.

Wood Family Funeral Service, Inc. was entrusted with her care.
