John E. Thalison, age 18, service number 36-446-123, entered the United States Army on April 27, 1943 from Ionia, MI. His Basic Training was taken at Camp McCoy. John completed Clerical Schooling. He served with the 49th Gereral Hospital and attained the rank of Technician Sergeant.
John participated in action against the enemy in New Guinea. He was a Technician behind the battle lines.
He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theatre Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon, W/1 Bronze Battle Star, three Overseas Service Stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
John was discharged from the Army on January 25, 1946 from Fort Sheridan, IL.
When he returned to civilian life he was employed by Meade Upholstery Shop on the G.I. Bill then later was employed as an Ionia County Deputy Sheriff, by the Ionia City Police Department, Mitchell Bentley Plant Security and the Chrysler Lyons Trim Plant.
He united in marriage with Justina May on December 7, 1946. The couple had one son, Martin Thalison of Ionia, MI.
John E. Thalison died July 17, 1977 in Grand Rapids, MI., and is buried in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Ionia, MI.
