Porter's father Daniel was a native of Paris, France and was a veteran of the war of 1812. Porter studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1860. In 1873 he was elected District Court Judge. He served as Mayor of the town of Jackson for 3 terms. During the civil war he was on a committee that went to Pittsburgh Landing to care for wounded Jackson County men in the Army, after the Commissioners of the County, and private citizens rasied over $300.00 for that purpose.
