Walter Smith Bruce was born to Capt. James Henderson and Sarah Louise (Cookingham) Bruce. For a time he worked for Hawley Bros. Hardware Co. He moved from San Francisco to Boise in 1887, where he worked as a bookkeeper for the Boise City National Bank. He married Elizabeth Margaret Bibbins in 1890. By fall of 1891 he was one of the directors of the bank.
He was active in the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Y.M.C.A.
They had three children: Helen Louise (Stoddard), Warren Richardson, and James Stewart
