2nd Lt. Edmund J. Lilly III
2nd Lt. Edmund Jones Lilly III, 22, of Fayetteville, was killed in action on Sept. 3, 1950, while serving with the 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War.
2nd Lt. Lilly was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart posthumously. His body was never recovered until his remains were found in Korea in 2003 and positively identified a year later.
2nd Lt. Lilly was born May 26, 1928, in Colon, Panama. He attended grammar school in Detroit, Atlanta and the Philippine Islands. His family lived in Fayetteville during World War II while his father, Col. Lilly, was a Prisoner of War of the Japanese.
2nd Lt. Lilly graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1944 and attended Millard, a West Point prep school, in Washington, D.C., from 1944-45. He attended the Citadel from 1945-46 for a year before receiving an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1946. He graduated from West Point on June 6, 1950, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry. On June 7, 1950, he married Mary Alma Russ of El Paso, Texas, in the Cadet Chapel at West Point.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in St. John's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Louanne Loch. Burial will be in Cross Creek Cemetery immediately following the service. Arrangements are being handled by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.
2nd Lt. Lilly is survived by his widow, Alma Hodes of Austin, Texas; and two sisters, Elizabeth Ann "Betty Ann" Lilly Dale Barrett of Mobile, Ala., and Victoria "Tori" Lilly MacMillan of Fayetteville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Col. and Mrs. Edmund Jones Lilly Jr. of Fayetteville.
The family will receive friends following the burial at the Kyle House adjacent to the church.
