Dr. Mancusi-Ungaro was born in Newark, son of Judge Themistocles and Marguerite Mancusi-Ungaro. He graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in 1940. Medicine was his calling. He became the eldest in the 12th generation of physicians in his family when he received his M.D., from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in December 1943, part of an accelerated wartime class.

After graduating, he interned in Newark City Hospital where he met Freda Liebman, whom he married in 1945. Dr. Mancusi-Ungaro was a veteran of World War II. Although he chose pediatrics, the war years had him stationed at Finney Hospital in Georgia where he practiced as a psychiatrist.

After the war, Dr. Mancusi-Ungaro completed a pediatric residency at New York Hospital. The couple settled in Montclair, where he opened his private practice of pediatrics in their house in 1949, and they raised their two children. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He served on the staff of Mountainside Hospital as well as Montclair Community and St. Vincent's hospitals. At Mountainside, he was proud of starting the poison control center. Professionally, he cared for two generations of children. He retired after 30 years to the day in 1979.

Dr. Mancusi-Ungaro enjoyed surf fishing at the Jersey shore, and traveling to Europe, especially Italy. He and Freda lived in North Miami Beach from 1979 to 1997. He also loved to cook. The couple moved to Beaumont, Texas, then relocated to Santa Rosa, Calif., in 2002.

Dr. Mancusi-Ungaro was predeceased in 2004 by his wife of 59 years, Freda. He is survived by his wife, Sheilah Ryan, whom he met in Santa Rosa; his son, Harold Jr. and wife Susan Mancusi-Ungaro; his daughter, Donna and husband Robert Hart; his grandchildren, Harold Themistocles Mancusi-Ungaro and his wife Monica, Marianna Mancusi-Ungaro, Robert Eric Hart and wife Erin, and Deanna Hart.
