Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 27th, 2010, at the St. John's Catholic Church, Herington, KS, with Rev. Mark Wesely officiating; burial will follow at the Lost Springs Cemetery, with military honors. Rosary will be held at the St. John's Catholic Church, Sunday at 7pm. The Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel, is in charge of services.
Mr. Alvarez was a retired Oil Rig Pumper and Driver. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Herington. He served in Korea with U.S. Army, with the 5th Armored Division as a Wire Section Chief.
Joe married Connie Gonzales on January 12, 1954, in Abilene; she survives at home. He is survived by four sons: Joe Alvarez, Jr. (wife-Barbara) of Hillsboro, Ron Alvarez (wife-Tonda) of El Dorado, KS, Carmen Alvarez (wife-Peggy) of Chapman, KS, Tony Alvarez (wife-Amanda) of Gothenburg, NE; two (2) daughters: Ruby Kilmer (husband-Jeff) of Herington, and Angela Seifert (husband-Steve) of Lost Springs, KS; three sisters: Mary Louise Llamas of Abilene, Patricia Estrada of Newton, Rosemary Ybarra of Galva, two brothers: Ralph Alvarez of Chula Vista, CA, and John Alvarez of Abilene, KS; 25 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by three sisters (Lupe Fuentes, Katherine Alvarez, Saccora Alvarez) and six brothers (Raymond, Saymon, Frank, Manuel, Antonio, John), and his parents.
