Mary Elizabeth Montgomery, eldest daughter and eighth child of Wm. and Mary Montgomery, was born November 11, 1839, in Clinton county, Ohio, where she spent her girlhood days and attended the common schools. On October 26, 1860, she was united in marriage with Silas Cloud in Clinton county, Ohio, They began farming there, where they lived a few years. In September, 1863, they moved to Illinois, settling in Richland County, where they bought a 60-acre farm in Denver township. In 1873 they sold this farm and moved on the 80 acres which has since been their home and where they have both died.
To this union were born six children: Ida, John L., Wm. H., Thomas W., Albert and Wylie L. All have preceded her in death with the exception of John and Wylie. In addition to their own family she and Mr. Cloud reared Esther Pilchard, Della Holbrook, and Emma Cazel, and were to them as father and mother. Mrs. Cloud has always lived in Denver township since 1863, and since the death of her husband, Silas Cloud, in 1916, she has made her home with her son John L. on the old home place.
She united with the Marion Chapel M. E. church (which is now called Wesley Chapel), over 40 years ago. She has been unable to attend church regularly for the past few years due to ill health, but was and ardent Christian woman, and was always to be found on the side of right. She was always ready to help th esick and afflicted, and was much sought for in cases of this kind. She has been a helpless invalid for the past two years and has been tenderly cared for all this time by Mrs. Wylie L. Cloud, John L. Cloud and Miss Anna Washburn, who have tried to relieve her suffering as much as they could. These people have been untiring in their efforts, but to them it has been a work of love , for which they will be rewarded by a feeling of having done their all.
"Aunt Mary", as she was generally known, was called away October 10, 1926, aged 86 years, 10 months and 29 days.
Funeral services were held at the Pleasant View church Wednesday, October 13, 1926, at 10 a.m. conducted by Rev. C.R. Wise, of the Noble M. E. church, with interment in the nearby cemetery.
