Samuel arrived from Pennsylvania after college in September 18, 1884. He learned Greek and Latin in school and used it to keep his diary entries private. He owned the Shields Fruit company, worked as a fruit shipper, and was the director of the local Farmer's Security Bank. Shields Avenue is named for him in Milton-Freewater, Oregon. He died in Milton, Umatilla, Oregon.
