Born in Independence, Missouri and moved with his parents to McKinney, Texas where he married Miss Abbie Simmons. To this union 3 children were born George, Hershel and a daughter who died in infancy. After Abbie's death, Mr Lucas married Annie DeBartle and together they had two children, JB Jr and Lillian (Fitzgerald). In 1894 the Lucas family moved to Checotah where he helped lay off the townsite and organize the first city government. In 1900 he became Checotah's second mayor. He also served as city attorney and Board of Education member for a number of years.
