Joseph Langham Yon Jr., M.D., of Seattle, Wash., died Dec. 6, 2001 while vacationing in Scottsdale, Ariz. Born in Charlottesville, Va., on Feb. 9, 1936, Dr. Yon attended the Virginia Military Institute where he served as commander of A Company with rank of cadet captain. He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Subsequently, he served over 20 years in the U.S Navy Medical Corps specializing in Obstetrics-Gynecology and Gynecological-Oncology. Notable among his numerous assignments during his Navy career were the USS Yellowstone (AD-27), Military Advisory Command, Hoi An, Republic of Vietnam, and the Naval Regional Medical Center, San Diego, Calif. He retired at the rank of captain, having been awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and National Defense Service Medal. Dr. Yon went on to practice medicine at U.C. San Diego and Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle where he held the positions of Department Head of Obstetrics-Gynecology, Section Head of Gynecologic-Oncology, Head of the Pelvic Surgery Fellowship, and was the recipient of numerous awards for outstanding resident teaching. During his professional career, he held clinical faculty appointments as Associate Professor in the Schools of Medicine at the University of Miami, the University of California at San Diego and the University of Washington. Retiring again in 1999, he continued to practice medicine part time while also pursuing his long-standing interest in Buddhism and was actively involved in efforts to help hospice caregivers support western Buddhists at end-of-life. Dr. Yon was predeceased by his brother, Dandridge H. Yon.
