Sally Ann Kauzlarich, died peacefully at the Hospice House, in Charlottesville, Sunday, October 3, 2010.
Sally was married for 58 years to James J. Kauzlarich and was a registered nurse at the University of Virginia Medical Center from 1973 until 1988 and from 1989 until 1990.
Sally was born on June 30, 1930, and raised by her paternal grandparents, Howard and Anna, in Unadilla, New York. She graduated as class Salutatorian from Unadilla Central High School. She attended Elmira College from September 1947 until June 1949 and obtained her pre-nursing certificate. She then went to Columbia University Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in New York with a Dean Sage Memorial Scholarship and graduated in September 1952.
She met her husband, Jim, when she was at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital on a blind date and enjoyed telling the story of how she fell in love.
She is survived by her brothers, Phil Smith and Roger Burr; her four children and their spouses, Ann Kauzlarich and Greg Miller, John Kauzlarich and Patti Kauzlarich, Susan Kauzlarich and Peter Klavins, and Jane Kauzlarich and Gene Ward; with 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several devoted nieces and nephews.
She was an active member of St. Paul's Memorial Church, serving on the vestry and other committees. She was a life-long Democrat and active member of the League of Women Voters.
Sally was generous and caring to her many friends and family. She was well-loved by her grandchildren and remembered for her interest in their concerns and successes. Sally was artistic, spending time being a potter and distributing many pieces both through craft fairs and to her many friends and family. She was an avid gardener, hiker and enjoyed traveling to England, meeting new people and having new experiences. She made many friends throughout her life with her vivacious spirit, great sense of humor and zest for life.
Sally's life was celebrated in a memorial service Saturday, October 9, 2010, at St. Paul's Memorial Church at the University.
