Death Fri. last week, after a long and difficult illness,
of Friedrich Carus, a very active and well thought of citizen
of our city. The deceased was elected to fill the office of
City Marshall 26 Aug. 1851. For a long time he has worked here
as a furrier. His funeral took place Sun. afternoon at the city
cemetery.

RESEARCHER NOTE:
Margaret d. in April per obit and Bertha died in May.
Margaret was 20 at her death and Bertha was 17.
This is from the 1880 census:
Fred. Carus age 61; wife Ernstine age 40; Sophia age 22; Eduard age 20;
Fred age 16; Bertha age 11.
Apparently Bertha was the elder Fred's daughter, and by 1887 the son
Fred would have been 23, so Margaret could well have been the younger
Fred's wife, but Bertha was his sister. I don't have the younger Fred's
marriage, but since Margaret died in Antigo, I'm guessing that's where
they got married.
