Mary Frances Sanders, daughter of Jesse and Mary Elmore, was born at Makanda, Illinois on February 16, 1865 and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Ferrill of Carbondale on August 26, 1939 at 6:45 p.m. She was aged 74 years, 6 months and 10 days.

On October 10, 1888 she was united in marriage to Simon B. Sanders to which union 3 children were born, a son, Raymond, having died in infancy. Two daughters remain: Mrs. James S. Ferrill and Mrs. L. M. Brooks both of Carbondale, Illinois.

As a young woman she professed faith in Christ and united with the Makanda Baptist Church where she remained a faithful and consistent member until moving to Carbondale 26 years ago when she united with the First Baptist Church of Carbondale of which Church she was a devoted member at the passing.

Mrs. Sanders was a nurse and engaged freely in the loving service of helping to alleviate the pain and suffering of humanity up until three years ago when her health made it impossible for her to continue in this work she loved so well.

She was a loving and devoted mother. She possessed a cheerful disposition and was always ready to be of service to her home which she loved and humanity about her as she made her contribution to life and the Kingdom of God. Hers was not a service for show, but the deeper strains of abiding values, many of which the public never knew, were the contributions she made to life.

She leaves to mourn her loss the devoted husband Simon Sanders, two daughters; six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Fold her, O Father! in Thine Arms,
And let her henceforth be
A messenger of love between
Our human hearts and thee.

Still let her mild rebuking stand
Between us and the wrong,
And her dear memory serve to make
Our faith in goodness strong.

And grant that she, who, trembling here,
Distrusted all her powers,
May welcome to her holier home
The well-beloved of ours. - Whittier
