CARL KLINGHOLZ (d. 1898)

Carl Klingholz died last Friday morning. He was born 27 June 1812 in Sprokhovel,
Westphalia and thus reached the age of 86. He came to America in 1849 and on
July 11 that year, arrived in Manitowoc and has lived in our county ever since.
He first settled in Manitowoc Rapids which at that time was the county seat and
opened a retail business. Later he opened a mill followed by building the
Klingholz Mill in Manitowoc Rapids. Eventually he turned the mill over to his
two sons and retired to Manitowoc. He suffered a blow when his son, Hugo died
suddenly in an accident. Carl Klingholz was a good man and held in high esteem.
He is survived by one son and two daughters. His wife and several children
preceded him in death. A throng of mourners attended the funeral on Sunday
afternoon at the city cemetery under the direction of the Free Mason Lodge.

Charles Klingholz of Manitowoc Rapids died on Friday of last week. He has
been in feeble health for some time though actively engaged in business. He was
born in Spockhoevel, Germany, June 27, 1812 and came to this country in
July 1849, settling at Manitowoc Rapids, then the most important place in the
county. Soon after his arrival he opened a general store on the corner where
Adolph Kugler now lives. The building occupied then as a store was moved to
Manitowoc on the ice during the winter by team and is now on the corner of
Eighth and Quay streets and used by Robert Lill as a cigar factory. Some years
after, Mr. Klingholz built a saw and grist mill about one-quarter of a mile farther
up the river than where the present mill is located. Later on he discontinued the
sawmill and moved the flour mill to its present site. When his sons became old
enough to take charge of the business he transferred it to them. On the death of
Charles, Oscar and Hugo he resumed control of the business and although
advanced in years he gave personal attention to its extensive details. He was the
organizer of the Manitowoc Rapids Fire Insurance Company and was its secretary
until a few years ago. He wan an enterprising man and took great interest in home
industry and development. He was a directory of the Manitowoc Mutual Fire
Insurance Company.
