Gospel Music Composer

Dr. Alfred B. Smith, Gospel music composer, soloist, lecturer, recording artist and music publisher, he was known as "Mr. Singspiration", after the ministry of the same name started by Dr. Smith and Billy Graham. He got his start in the Gospel industry in 1930 with a radio broadcast that aired on WKBO, Jersey City, New Jersey, called "the Old Fashioned Gospel Hour".

In 1937, after graduating from the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, he took a position as Minister of Music at The Church of the Open Door in Philadelphia. In 1938, Dr. Smith wrote, "For God So Loved the World," a well-known hymn.

In 1943, Dr. Smith, Billy Graham and George Beverly Shea developed the idea of "Youth for Christ", a ministry that catered to young people and especially young men in the armed forces. Their idea was later brought to fruition by a young evangelist from Chicago, Torrey Johnson. "Youth for Christ" has since expanded to be an international organization.

Dr. Smith also wrote and published, "Living Hymns" in 1972 and "Hymn Histories" in 1982, the latter being the culmination of his life-long interest in the origins of hymns.
