She was an award-winning teacher in Eunice, New Mexico. A year or two before she died, the state auditers came to our school district, and when their report came back, each teacher was required to spend a certain number of hours the next year observing Mary Cliff. The next year, at age 56, she decided to retire to do a lot of the things she had never had time to do. She went home on the last day of school to have lunch with her husband. When she returned, she had a heart attack in the teacher's lounge. She was transported to Andrews Hospital in Andrews, Texas, but died about 10 minutes after school had let out with her retirement papers in her purse.
