Charles Emil Speck, Sr was born March 6, 1888 on the Wilhelm ranch in Menard, Texas to Frederick "Fred" Leopold Speck and Helena "Lena" Augusta (Wilhelm) Speck. He was the first born of 9 children. Charles grew up in Menard County doing ranch work for his father and helping herd sheep for his grandmother, Johanna Wilhelm. He received part of his education at a boarding school in Brady, Texas.

Charles married Laura Vina Behringer of Ballinger on June 15, 1915 and they ranched in Schleicher County, where they had a son born in 1916 and a daughter in 1918.

When Vina died in 1923, Charlie moved to San Angelo so the children could attend school.

At 71, he was living at Sierra Blanco in Hudspeth County at the time of his death on August 2, 1959.
