Melvin Snider, 83, formerly of Ottumwa, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Graveside services will be 2pm Thursday, Oct. 7, at the West Liberty Cemetery in Montezuma. Interment will be in the West Liberty Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1:15-1:45pm Thursday at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Pickwick Church in Ottumwa.

Melvin Lee Snider, son of Fay and Cecile(Tish)Snider, was born on Aug. 30, 1927, in Montezuma. Melvin graduated from Montezuma High School in 1946. During high school, he worked for various farmers and at the Poweshiek County Home. Melvin received his Limited Elementary Teaching Certificate from William Penn in the fall of 1946. He taught at several county schools. Melvin received the Lifetime Standard Elementary Teaching Certificate in 1950 from William Penn. Melvin taught and coached at Kinross, Martinsburg and Tracy schools while receiving his B.S. degree in education from Drake University in 1956. Melvin continued his education and obtained his M.A. degree in elementary administration from Northeast Missouri State University in 1964.

Melvin spent 31 of his 41-year teaching career in the Ottumwa school district before retiring in 1989. Melvin attended the Pickwick Church of Christ and taught adult Sunday school classes for many years. He enjoyed reading, keeping up on current events and staying involved with church activities.

Melvin is survived by nieces and nephews, Larry(Rachel)Snider of St. George, Utah, Sandra(Cecil)Bodeman of Greenfield, Ind., Darrel(Bonnie)Snider of Coshocton, Ohio, Dennis(JO)Snider of Johnston and Kathy(Kevin)Osborn of Montezuma. He also leaves behind many great-nieces and nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother and his wife, Raymond(Doris)Snider; a sister, Maxine Sniderp; and a niece, Karla Snider.
