Mrs. Achenbach, 84, Dies at Rapids Home
Mrs. Elizabeth Achenbach, 84, a resident of Manitowoc county for more
than 60 years, and widow of the late Jacob Achenbach, died last night
at the homestead farm on Route 1, Manitowoc, now operated by her son,
Charles Achenbach. Diseases incident to old age caused her death.
Funeral services will be held from the Achenbach homestead in Manitowoc
Rapids Friday at 1:30 p.m. and at 2 p.m. from the First German Evangelical
Lutheran church.
Mrs. Achenbach, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Krug, was born at Hesen
Darm Stadt, Germany, in 1849 and at the age of 18 years joined a party of
young women friends and journeyed to America. Upon her arrival, October 15,
1867 on her eighteenth birthday she was met by Jacob Achenbach whom she
had known back in Germany and to whom she was married one month later.
The young couple settled on a farm in the town of Rapids and started to
make a home in what was then a virtual wilderness. They lived there for
two years and sold it to take up the present homestead. Only three acres
of the land was under cultivation when Mr. and Mrs. Achenbach took over
the present farm. For years Mrs. Achenbach assisted her husband in clearing
the land and became expert in the use of the axe and pick.
Mr. Achenbach died in 1917, at the age of 79.
Survivors are two sons, Charles on the homestead and Oscar of Chicago, six
daughters, Mrs. John Verby, Mrs. Otto Cullman, Mrs. Benjamin Krisher and
Mrs. Edwin Meyers, all of Chicago, Mrs. William Spiegel, Mishicot and Mrs.
Herman Wienke, Manitowoc Rapids, and a brother Henry Krug in Germany.
The body was removed to the Achenbach home in Rapids this afternoon from
the Wattawa-Urbanek and Schlei funeral home.
