William Edward Slover, 93, of Linton, passed away at 12:41 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at Greene County General Hospital in Linton.
He was born in Shelburn on June 27, 1917, the son of John and Nannie (Lay) Slover.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Ed worked 20 years as manager for Kroger Grocery Stores in Shelburn & Linton, and retired from AMAX Coal Company, after working 27 years in the coal mining industry.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, American Legion Post #22, B.P.O.Elks #866 (life member), and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge (Past Master of Shelburn Lodge), all of Linton.
Survivors include three sons, Jim (Annetta) Slover of Brownsburg, Phil (Inair) Slover of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Brent (Cheri) Slover of Linton; two daughters, Janice and Jane Slover, both of Linton; seven grandchildren, Angie (Gregg) Jones, Jimmy (Kristy) Slover, Andy (Susan) Neal, Carroll Neal, Kristy Slover, Ryan and Evan Slover, 10 great-grandchildren, Amanda Miller, Austin Jones, Victoria Slover, Lilly Slover, Frank Slover, Kasi (Scott) Bedwell, Tylar Markle, Savanna Neal, Aubrey Neal, Isabella Slover, two great-great grandchildren, Kendra and Kinsey Bedwell; a brother, John Slover of Monticello; and a sister, Thelma Hauger of Springfield, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Evelyn Slover, whom he married on Sept. 3, 1939; a grandson, Keith Slover; two sisters, Maude Thompson and Opal McCord; and an infant brother.
Funeral service will be at the First Baptist Church in Linton at 11 a.m. Monday, October 11, with Reverends David Tyra & Gene Jeffers officiating.
Burial will follow at the Fairview Cenetery in Linton, with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post #22.
Visitation will be held at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home on Sunday from 4-8 p.m., with Masonic Service at 7 p.m., and on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
