James F. "Dusty" Rhoades, 68, of 107 Spruce St., passed away at 12:08 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, in the emergency room at Sunbury Community Hospital, where he was taken after being stricken suddenly at home.

He was born May 8, 1938, in Sunbury, a son of the late Warren Allen and Dorothy (Yeager) Rhoades. He was married to the former Kay Louise Treon.

He retired in 1975 from the Air Force after 20 years of service. His military positions included nuclear weapons tech instructor, superintendent of weapons, NCOIC administrative communications, chief central base administration, housing officer and administration of personnel supervisor in the first sergeant AWACS program.

He received numerous ribbons and medals, including the Meritorious Commendation Service Medal with two oak leafs, Army Good Conduct Medal with three knots, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, three oak leafs, the National Defense Medal, Outstanding Unit Awards, Longevity Service Ribbon with three clusters, the Marksmanship Ribbon, the Air Force Overseas Service Ribbon and numerous citations.

Dusty later retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1996. He was a clerk in the Postal Service, was a supervisor of processing and distribution and was supervisor of fleet operations for the Allegheny Region of the Postal Service. He was the owner and chief executive officer of Dusty's Enterprises Inc. He also worked as a salesperson for Montgomery Wards.

He served as a deputy sheriff and corrections officer in Union County. He also was a deputy to the U.S. Marshal's Guard, Middle District of Pennsylvania.

Dusty attended Sunbury High School.

He attended Grace Lutheran Church, Sunbury.

He was a life member of American Legion Post 201, Sunbury, and was the first commander to be elected twice at the post, and was adjutant for four years, and served as adjutant of American Legion Post 92.

He was sergeant-at-arms in the 17th District of the Pennsylvania Department of the American Legion and was commander, deputy commander, finance committee chairman and chairman of the nomination committee. He was the central judicial section adjutant, chairman of national security and vice chairman of national and homeland security.

He was chairman of the Citizen Committee for Union County, served as Republican committeeman in the Third Ward, Sunbury, and was a member of the Senate Service Academy Appointment Committee.

Dusty was a veterans adviser to Rep. Merle Phillips and was vice chairman of board of directors of the Pennsylvania Homeless Veterans and Vocational Rehabilitation Center, which he was instrumental in starting.

He was a member of the board of directors of the Friendship Fire Company and the Goodwill Hose Company, served with the Sunbury Fire Police and was a social member of the Shamokin Dam Fire Company.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Barry Swartz, Ramona and Donald Ross, Cindy and Randy Gardner and Martha and Jerry Boop; seven grandchildren, Alex and Jessica Swartz, Olivia and Katie Boop, Travis Keiser Rhoades and Natasha and Donald Ross Jr.; three sisters, Mary Koch, Nellie Nadzon and Martha Oberlin; one brother, Joseph Rhoades; and one stepsister, Ruth.

He was preceded by two brothers, Warren and Morton Rhoades.
