Pearl Raymond Long was born in Graham, Texas to Elbert Long of Kentucky (son of Henry Long and Harriett Coon Long both of Kentucky) and Mary Piller Coon Long of Kentucky (daughter of John H. Coon and Sarah K. Dean Coon both of Kentucky). Pearl had two older sisters Ola Gertrude and Bessie Faye and two younger sisters Blanche Lois and Zelma Irene. In 1910, Raymond was living in El Paso with his parents and sisters. In El Paso in 1918 Raymond joined the US Navy during WWI. Pearl and Ethel Greer of Parsons, New Mexico (daughter of John Franklin Greer and Maggie May Corn Greer, both of Texas) were married in Silver City, New Mexico on 6/10/1920. They had three children Pearl Raymond "Bus" Jr., Edgar Verdie and Elma Joyce all born in Hurley, New Mexico. The family moved to Miami, Arizona where Pearl was a boilermaker at the copper mines. Their youngest son Gerald Keith Long was born in Miami and just over three weeks later Ethel became ill from parametritis. He also married briefly to Irma Maxwell Burk previous to his marriage to Grace Milbourn (daughter of Bert Lung and Margaret Melinda Idella Williams Lung) in Silver City, New Mexico on 4/12/1938.
