SAD DROWNING

On Tuesday of last week Mr. Hamilton Howard and his wife were coming to the city, from their home, on the south side of the Neosho, two or three miles below the junction, and while attempting to cross the Cottonwood just above the junction, at the Davis ford, Mr. Howard lost his life. The stream was considerably swollen, and one of Mr. Howard's horses got frightened and became unmanageable. Mr. H. also became excited. At this juncture a man came to their rescue with a canoe. Mrs. Howard entered it and was saved, but Mr. Howard insisted upon remaining with his team to try to save it. He jumped from the wagon to the back of one of the horses. One of his feet became entangled in some way in the harness, and he went under. His body was found a short time after, but in attempting to get it into a canoe the latter capsized, and all efforts to secure it had proved futile up to Wednesday this is indeed a sad case. Mr. Howard was a most estimable man from all we can learn. He came to Lyon county some four or five years ago, and built a substantial brick residence and was an honored and useful man.

The body of Hamilton Howard, drowned in the Neosho three weeks ago, we reported last week had not been found. After going to press we learned that it had been found that day (last Thursday)by a little boy, lodged in a drift, three miles below the place where it went down.
