Quoted from Article 560, "The Heritage of Stokes County North Carolina": Bunn was five years old when the Civil War broke out. He recalled that his father, James Henry, was killed during the war and his body shipped to Wentworth. Becky Mabe, Bunn's mother, hired someone to pick the body up at the railroad station. He wore a suit made out of flax for the burial.

Parents were Leroander "Leroy" Nelson and Bethanie "Thanie" Flinchum who married in Stokes County, NC on 7/25/1812

His siblings were Wiltshire Nelson, Pendleton Gains Nelson, Lettitia Nelson, John Nelson, Samuel Nelson, William Nelson, Leander Harding 'Captain Lee' Nelson and Bethina 'Thiny' Ann Nelson Smith.
