Killed in World War 1 and buried with his mother, Martha E (Harper) Brown. He had been born and raised on the family's farm in Mulberry Grove, Bond County, Illinois, until his parents divorced, some time between 1910 and his enlistment. He was the next to the youngest of five children (2 sisters and 2 brothers) born to Martha Harper and William Brown, who had married in March, 1875. {Another sister, Emma, had been born and had died prior to his birth.}According to the 1900 U S Census, John was born in June, 1894, but his headstone shows 1893 as his year of birth. Either way, John died at a young age far from home.
John H Brown died Aug 3rd, 1918 in Fere-en-Tardenois, France, during 'The Second Battle of The Marne'. The defeat of Germany culminated in the Armistice with Germany 100 days after the end of the battle, on November 11th, 1918 [now known as Veteran's Day]. John's remains were shipped back to Illinois and he was buried at Mulberry Grove Cemetery in Mulberry Grove, Bond Co., Illinois. Apparently, his mother had divorced by the time of his passing as she purchased a headstone she would share with her youngest son upon her demise [I assume she had decided she would not remarry]. His mother died in 1945 and was buried near her son, with her name below his on their headstone. May they Rest Peacefully in Paradise.

John's grandmother was Priscilla H. (Burkhart) Brown, a daughter of Peter Burkhart, brother of my maternal 3x great grandfather, John Burkhart. He is my mother's 3rd cousin.
