Joseph B. Hylton, 73, beloved citizen of six miles north-east of Ava, died Wednesday night from an attack of pneumonia. He had been ill only a short time.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete, pending word from relatives in California and Arizona.

Mr. Hylton was born in Virginia on July 10, 1863. He came to Missouri early in life, and had been a resident of this county for many years. Just recently he returned from an extended visit with his children in California, and apparently was in good health until stricken with pneumonia rather suddenly. He was in Ava last Saturday, paying his taxes and telling friends about his pleasant visit with his children. He was perhaps the most highly respected citizen of Douglas county. If he had an enemy no one knew It.

He lived quietly at his home with his wife, and was a safe and wise counselor for many of his neighbors. He always took an active interest religious and civic affairs. He was a Dunkard minister.

Survivors include his wife and seven children. The children are: Edmond, Bernie, and Mrs. Charles Robertson of Bakersfield Calif.; Horace, of Garden Grove, Calif.; Reece, of Anaheim, Calif.; Mrs. Lester Fike, of Arizona; and Mrs. Hanna Robertson, of California.

Mr. and Mrs. Hylton celebrated their golden wedding anniversary early this year.

OBITUARY

Eld. Joseph Birely Hylton, son of Elijah W. and Hannah Bowman Hylton, was born July 10, 1863, near Floyd, Va., where he grew to manhood.

October 9, 1884, he was married to Orlena Belle Collier. To this union ten children were bora, six sons and four daughters. With his wife and one son he came to Missouri early in 1887. In the same year Oct. 10, 1887, they homesteaded in Douglas county and for 48 years they have resided at their present home near Ava, Mo.

The Master called him to his heavenly home Dec. 25, 1935, age 72 years, 5 months, and 15 days. He is survived by his wife; four sons, Edmond, Rhesa, Horace, and Vemie, all of California; three daughters, Hannah Robertson and Maude Robertson of California, and Edna Fike of Clovis, N. Mex.; thirty-two grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Two children died in infancy and the youngest daughter, Eula, wife of Elder Ramie Goss, passed away three years ago.

He is also survived by two brothers, Granville and Eld. A. N. Hylton of Floyd, Va; one half-brother, Clovis, of California; three sisters, Roena Marshall, Eliza Sutphin, and Cassie Aldridge, all of Floyd, Va.; one half-sister, Lola Bowers, of Fresno, Calif.; and an innumerable host of friends.

At the age of 21 he accepted Christ as his Savior and united with the Church of the Brethern. He was elected to the office of deacon in 1887. In 1892 he was called to the Christian ministry in the Fairview church (Douglas county, Mo.) where he was a charter member Two years later he was advanced in the ministry and in 1900 was ordained to the eldership or full ministry.

Much of his time was given to the work of the ministry. He traveled many miles, walking and horseback, giving his time and efforts free to the preaching of the gospel in many surrounding communities. He kept no records of many sermons he preached and the number he baptized. He solemnized 62 marriages, the last one during his last illness.

He served his district six or more times on the standing committee at the annual (International) Conference of the church and was many times elected moderator of the District Conference. He served faithfully for many years on district boards and committees where his counsel was invaluable. He also served as elder in charge of two churches besides his home congregation where he served in this capacity for nearly thirty years.

He was very sympathetic, a man of sterling character, a kind and helpful disposition, and excellent judgment. He was often called on for advice in civic and community life as well as in the church.

Besides the family who greatly mourn his passing he will be greatly missed by his neighbors and many friends in the community and in the church. Truly a great soul has been called from us to be with his Master, whom he dearly loved and faithfully served.

All the children were home for the funeral except Hannah the oldest daughter. All arrived within a few hours of each other. The four sons and the son-in-laws acted as pall bearers for the funeral.

Funeral services were held in the Fairview church Sunday afternoon, Dec. 29, 1935 with Eld. A. W. Adkins of Cabool in charge, assisted by Eld P. L. Fike of West Plains, Mo. A group from the church sang a number of selections for the service including the following: "How Beautiful Heaven Must Be," "God Will Take Care of You," and "I'll Live On." Interment was in the church cemetery, with the Clinkingbeard Undertaking Co. in charge.
