Ivie Lena Upshaw Ferguson, age 97, died February 28, 2010 in Redding, Calif., where she lived after Hurricane Katrina. Mrs. Ferguson was born December 22, 1912 in Spearsville, La., and was the daughter of William Elisha Upshaw and Martha Frances Phillips Upshaw. A beloved homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mrs. Ferguson was known for her gentility, her hospitality and her belief in the rightness of all things Southern.

A former elementary school teacher, Mrs. Ferguson earned a teaching certificate from Louisiana Tech University and continued her education at LSU. She was a long-time member of College Place Baptist Church and, later in life, Parkview Baptist Church.

Widow of the late William Otto Ferguson, Ivie Ferguson lived in Monroe from 1949, when her husband purchased West Monroe Tractor Company, the local Ford tractor dealership, until moving to New Orleans in 2004.

Mrs. Ferguson is predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years and her siblings: Travis Z. Upshaw, Ora Upshaw Elkins, Elton Jefferson Upshaw, William Stanford Upshaw, Jessie Luther Upshaw, Ola Upshaw Driggers, Florence Upshaw McCormick and Ray Benoyd Upshaw.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Lyle William and Linda Ritter Ferguson of New Orleans; daughter and son-in-law Susan and John Pitchford Greaves, M.D., of Redding, Calif.; Granddaughters and grandsons-in-law Amy Ferguson and Anthony Crim and Ruth Ferguson and John Vito Quaglino of New Orleans; grand-daughter Heather Elaine Greaves of Gainesville, Fla.; grandson and granddaughter-in-law Wade Patrick and Jennifer Edmonds Greaves of Portland, Ore.; great-grandsons John Angelo Quaglino and Connor Ferguson Quaglino; and many much-loved nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ferguson was the epitome of a Southern lady. Her cheerfulness, her delight in those she loved and her smile will be sorely missed.

Friends and family are invited to visitation at the Chapel of Kilpatrick Funeral Home, Lamy Lane, Monroe, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2010.

Funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Connie Ward.

Burial will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe.

Donations in her memory made be made to Louisiana Baptist Children's Home.
