On 6 Feb 1880, he married Ida Marie Gustavson, from Sweden. They had a son, Alfred, in 1882, and the following year they emigrated to the United States on the vessel, Lessing.
It is believed that they first settled in Ravenna Twp., Muskegon Co., Michigan, where they were farming in 1900. By this time, they had four more children: Anna, Jennie, Margaret, and John. Two other children, likely infants, died young.
In 1910, and again in 1920, John and his family were farming in Sullivan Twp., Muskegon Co., Michigan. Sometime after 1924, they moved to 468 Center Street in Coopersville, Ottawa Co., Michigan. In 1930, John was working as a janitor at a condensory.
The couple celebrated their 60th anniversary with much fanfare in their community. John passed away a few months later.
