JOSEPH C. BAYER, JR.
AGE: 89 GRIGGSTOWN

Joseph C. Bayer, Jr., 89, of Griggstown died Friday, Oct. 8, 2010.

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1921, Joe resided in Griggstown for the past 50 years.

Joe honorably and faithfully served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a B-25 C/D Mitchell Bomber Flight Engineer/Crew Chief.

After the War, Joe worked as a machinist at Sperry as he apprenticed under the legendary Gun Engraver Joe Fugger and learned the trade of engraving. Joseph was employed for 44 years as a gun engraver with Griffin and Howe in Bernardsville and earned many accolades during that time for his skill and artistry. Of special note, he engraved a four-star shotgun set for Army General (Retired) H. Norman Schwarzkopf.

He was a member of the Saint Barnabas Episcopal Church in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey. He will be missed by his many friends and family and remembered as a good friend of the sporting community and his mentorship of young engravers.

Son of the late Joseph C. and Gertrude (Ward) Bayer, Sr., he is survived by his longtime companion and dear friend and her two sons and their wives and his granddaughter. He is also survived by two brothers; a sister and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at the M.J. Murphy Funeral Home, 616 Ridge Road at New Road, Monmouth Junction. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Burial Park, East Brunswick. Friends may call Tuesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
