Kenneth James Burdick, 94, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at Cottage Care Circle in Mauston, after a short battle with cancer.

Ken was born April 29, 1916, in Clinton Township, Wis., the son of Chesnia and Beulah (VanDuzee) Burdick. He attended the one-room Knickerbacker School in Elroy, Wis. He completed his education in Chicago. He was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elroy.

Ken loved all things mechanical. His career included 33 years as superintendent of building engineers for Otis Elevator Company in Chicago. He was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1913 and was a lifetime endowment member of the National Rifle Association. He was a district leader of the Republican Party in the Chicago area.

Ken was a member of the Richland Mule Train Association. He loved mule competitions and mule races, wagon trains, trail riding, camping, and dancing. He was an avid collector of Louis L'Amour books and western memorabilia. He was a well-known participator at numerous mule and horse shows and competitions in the Wisconsin area. Ken's walls and shelves were lined with ribbons and trophies he won from the age of 70 until the present time. His success in these competitions resulted in Ken and his beloved mule, Buster, being featured in several publications.

Ken was preceded in death by his wife, Marian (Burt) Burdick, and their infant daughter, Linda Elizabeth. Ken is survived by his former wife, Lois (Cox) Schuchard of St. Charles, and their six children: Doris (Donald) Vincent of Eyota, Genevieve (Dennis) Caouette of Gulfport, Miss., Ramona (Wayne) Freeman of McKinney, Texas, Ella (Richard) Steffens of Lebanon, Ore., Chesnia (Neva) Burdick of Hager City, Wis., and Janice (Allen) Timm of St. Charles; his brother, Emmett Burdick of Rochester; and three nephews, Dennis (Susan) Burdick of Rochester, Dean (Janet) Burdick of Chanhassen, Minn., and LaVern (Sandy) Burdick of Rochester; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Ken will live on in the memories of his family and friends when they fondly recall his ready wit, wisdom, and infectious humor. He enjoyed living his life to the fullest.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, at Grace Lutheran Church, 800 E. Silver Lake Dr. N.E., Rochester, with Pastor Greg Heidorn officiating.
