Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, 20th Pennsylvania Governor. He entered the Civil War as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, which was one of the initial three-month regiments raised in the beginning of the war. He later rose to Lieutenant Colonel of the 45th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry before being promoted to Colonel and commander of the 148th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He lost his right leg at the August 25, 1864 Battle of Reams’ Station, Virginia. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on August 1, 1864 for “highly meritorious and distinguished conduct throughout the campaign, particularly for valuable services at Cold Harbor, while commanding a brigade”. In 1887 he was elected Governor of Pennsylvania, and served from 1887 to 1891.
