"Salisbury Center - Entered into rest June 10th, 1897 Mary Charlotte Byington, aged 26 years.
The subject of the above notice was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George L. Byington, of Salisbury Center, NY. Here surrounded by all the comforts and luxuries loving parents could bestow, she passed a very happy childhood. At the age of fourteen, for the purpose of obtaining better educational advantages, she left home to reside with her uncle James B. Avery, at Oneida Castle, NY and entered the class of '89 in Oneida High School. After four years of faithful study she graduated from this school with high honors. Soon after her graduation germs of disease began to manifest themselves in her system which, in spite of every effort of loving parents and medical skill, finally developed into phthisis (tuberculosis). Hoping to stay the ravages of the dread disease, she went with her parents to southern California, where she remained nearly three years. The hopes of permanent restoration to health were not realized and she returned home last September, since which time she has been gradually growing weaker, until her spirit took its flight early Thursday morning, June 10th. Miss Byington was a devoted and consistent member of St. John's Episcopal church of Oneida, NY, where many sincere friends will be saddened by her early death. Her gentle, loving disposition won for her many devoted friends who evinced their affection in their many kindly acts during her illness. Funeral services were held at the residence of her parents June 12th, at 1 p.m., conducted by Rev. Mr. Tompkins assisted by Rev. Mr. Harkness."
