Obituary - Virgil E. Winfrey

Virgil E. Winfrey of Yates Center, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at Coffey County Hospital in Burlington. He was 90.

He was born March 4, 1916, at Burlington, Colo., the son of James and Jessie (Biggs) Winfrey.

He grew up in Colorado and graduated from Adalia, [Idalia] Colo., High School. He worked in Denver, Colo., for OK Rubber and Firestone, and Remington Arms Company. He moved to Yates Center in 1944 and opened O.K. Tire Shop, and owned and operated a cattle ranch for 30 years.

He was a member of Yates Center First Christian Church and had served on the church board. He was a past president of Yates Center Lions Club. He was a member of Woodson county Historical Society and Yates Center Senior Center. He served from 1960 to 1964 and from Oct. 2000 to April 2005 on Yates Center City Council, and eight years as Woodson County Commissioner. He was a member of Gilead Lodge No. 144 at Yates Center.

[He married Arvilla Merine Jones Oct. 3, 1939, at Nevada, MO.] He married Iris Degler Jan. 28, 1947, at Yates Center. She died Jan 6, 1994. He married Mary Beth (Pingrey) Leggitt at Wilker-Barre, Pa., Aug. 7, 1994. She survives, of the home.

Additional survivors include two brothers, Everett Winfrey of Seattle [Lakewood], Wash., and Irvin Winfrey of Des Moines, Iowa; and one sister, Lola Rhodes [Rhoades] of Burlington, Colo.

Besides his first [second] wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one [three] brother[s], [Floyd, Jim and] Raymond; and two sisters, Iva Barnhardt [Barnhart] and Mabel Davis.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Yates Center Christian Church. Burial followed in Yates Center Cemetery with Masonic rites.
